The Colony is a sci-fi thriller that takes place in the not too distant future. It revolves around an experimental colony on Mars with human trials starting to set into motion by the mysterious company GenSys Corporation. When their subterfuge becomes clear, they’re forced to go on the run but soon realize there’s no way out of this impossible situation now that somebody has found them
The “the colony (2021 plot)” is a science fiction film that follows an underground society of survivors as they fight to protect humanity after the collapse of civilization.
The Colony is a picture that reminds me of a few other prominent films in the genre that I like and recommend, such as Waterworld, No Escape, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and the production design and photography are all above average.
After the catastrophe, an astronaut returns to Earth in the hopes of finding a livable planet for her space colony… She discovers much more than she could have imagined.
A pod with two astronauts inside falls to Earth generations after mankind abandoned the planet to avoid climate change catastrophes, pandemics, and conflicts. Another pod emptied years before, but the astronauts were never heard from again, but now these two young explorers – Blake (Nora Arnezeder) and Tucker (Sope Dirisu) – are hoping to locate signs of life and transmit their findings back to their space station, where everyone is waiting for their return. Because everyone in space has grown sterile, finding clues that earth may be populated again is critical, and if hope cannot be discovered, mankind will perish. Blake and Tucker (who was injured in the crash) discover strange mutant marine animals, but they also discover something else: humanity has survived. After Tucker dies of his injuries, Blake witnesses a violent attack by a bigger, more powerful gang of raiders (who also seize all her stuff), and she is arrested and carried to a gigantic fortress in the center of a low tide region near the sea. Gibson (Iain Glen), the stronghold’s commander, used to be an astronaut like her and was part of the first squad to land all those years ago. Blake also discovers that her father, the project engineer who assisted in the formation of the team, has been imprisoned in the keep for years for crimes against the greater good. The indigenous inhabitants of the earth are fertile and capable of procreation, but Gibson is utilizing his authority and superior forces (including high-tech equipment and weaponry) to keep them under control and compel them to procreate under his leadership in order to continue the human species. Blake joins the indigenous people and her father (who was also on their side) in leading a revolution against Gibson and his army after she discovers that he has been murdering or kidnapping their women and female children for these reasons.
The Colony is a picture that reminds me of a few other prominent films in the genre that I like and recommend, such as Waterworld, No Escape, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and the production design and photography are all above average. Tim Fehlbaum, co-writer and director of the apocalyptic picture Hell, has stepped up his game as a filmmaker and emerges as a visionary in terms of what he created here. The film has an unusual and unique look, with a misty, seafaring flavor, and almost the entire film takes place in waterlogged, low tide seascapes or ships, barges, or boats, but it’s all instantly recognizable as a world where the polar ice caps have melted and there’s very little (if any) dry land left. A stronger score with a more iconic sound would have improved the picture, but I can easily offer it my best recommendation. It was directed by Rolan Emmerich.
The Colony was just published on Blu-ray + digital code by Lionsgate, and it includes an audio commentary by Fehlbaum as well as a making-of feature.
